Journalists from various public and private media outlets in the province of Lunda-Sul were equipped with knowledge about the Kimberley Process (KP) on Saturday.
The participants were informed about “Mastering the Kimberley Process certification system,” “Kimberley Process trends and current issues in review and reforms,” and “Statistics on global production and trade of rough diamonds: Angola’s position in the ranking.”
On the occasion, Estanislau Buio, the Executive Secretary of the Kimberley Process Commission (KP), explained the 20-year journey of implementing the KP, highlighting Angola’s pioneering role in this process.
Estanislau Buio emphasized that the process will undergo a review and reform, scheduled for November of the current year, aiming to reach consensus for the approval of various ongoing topics.
Regarding Angola’s figures and position within the KP, Estanislau Buio stated that Angola ranks third in terms of values and sixth in production.
On the other hand, he conveyed that the United Nations adopted Resolution 55/56 in the year 2000, with the goal of curbing blood diamonds in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
He also highlighted that minerals have been causing significant conflicts worldwide, particularly in the Great Lakes Region and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
In 2003, in Kimberley, South Africa, the process bearing the same name was officially launched and established.
In addition to journalists, the seminar was attended by representatives of mining companies and officials from the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Petroleum (MIREMPET) from the provinces of Lunda-Sul and Lunda-Norte.
