Caculo-Cabaça Hydroelectric Development Project Advances to 15% Completion

The director of the Caculo-Cabaça Hydroelectric Development project, Augusto Chico, reported that construction has reached 15% completion in São Pedro da Quilemba, municipality of Cambambe, Cuanza-Norte province.

This update was shared during a visit by Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, and Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Tomas Alweendo, as part of a bilateral cooperation agreement.

Augusto Chico highlighted that the project is currently in an accelerated phase aiming for electricity production by October 2026.

Key components such as the main power station, hydraulic circuits, dam, water intake, and support structures are actively being mobilized to meet project milestones.

He further noted the completion of the first phase, which included diverting the river branch and constructing a sturdy bridge over the Kwanza River capable of supporting 210 tons. This infrastructure is crucial for transporting large equipment necessary for the project.

Progress on underground excavations at the main plant shows 34% completion, with the return and adduction tunnels at 22% completion, indicating smooth advancement in these critical areas.

The project currently employs 2,500 workers, with plans to increase this to 5,000 by mid-next year, reaching a peak of around 8,000 employees.

This expansion in workforce underscores the project’s significant contribution to local employment and economic development.

The Caculo-Cabaça Hydroelectric Development project remains on track to enhance Angola’s energy infrastructure, contributing to sustainable development and regional energy security.
