Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom and Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries have inked a pivotal agreement for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.
Set to be completed by 2025, this ambitious project aims to bolster Burkina Faso’s electricity production, with projections indicating a doubling of output by 2030.
The agreement delineates a comprehensive roadmap, charting a course for the development of Burkina Faso’s nuclear energy capabilities and the establishment of requisite infrastructure.
Additionally, it underscores the commitment to formulate a robust regulatory framework to govern nuclear energy operations within the nation.
Yacouba Zabré Gouba, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, emphasized the transformative potential of the power plant, affirming, “The establishment of this power plant will initially help reduce the energy deficit and eventually support all sectors of Burkina Faso’s socio-economic life.”
This collaborative endeavor builds upon the foundation laid by a memorandum of understanding signed between Burkina Faso and Rosatom in October 2023, marking a significant stride towards the realization of Burkina Faso’s energy ambitions.
