The BRILHO Programme, designed to foster sustainability and provide universal access to clean energy, has benefitted over 2.2 million Mozambicans in the first quarter of this year.
According to program officials, 1,332,230 individuals have gained access to solar systems, while 920,790 people have benefited from improved cooking solutions, resulting in a reduction of over 560,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
In addition to providing clean energy access, the BRILHO Programme has facilitated economic empowerment by enabling over 32,000 micro and small entrepreneurs to utilize technology for income generation across various economic activities, thereby contributing to local economic development.
Since its inception, the programme has attracted £33.7 million (approximately $42.3 million) in additional private funding for the renewable energy sector and has generated 1,971 new jobs.
Moreover, it has supported the Mozambican government in developing regulatory frameworks for off-grid areas, making the country more appealing to investors in the renewable energy sector.
In a significant development, SNV, along with the governments of the United Kingdom and Sweden, has extended the BRILHO Programme until October 2026, with an additional contribution of £8.7 million.
This brings the total funding for the programme to £38 million and underscores the partners’ commitment to sustainability and development in Mozambique. The extension aims to expand the programme’s reach and impact, benefiting even more individuals across the country.
