BP’s Senegal-Mauritania LNG Project Nears First Export

BP’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project is set to load its first cargo within weeks, according to junior partner Kosmos Energy.

The BP-led project began LNG production earlier this year, as detailed in Kosmos Energy’s 2024 earnings report.

The first cargo is expected later this quarter, with an LNG tanker already positioned at the Hub Terminal, ready for loading.

Kosmos Energy confirmed that gas from GTA’s first phase began flowing from production wells to the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel on December 31, 2024, marking a crucial step in the commissioning process.

Earlier this month, the project started delivering natural gas to the floating LNG vessel and initiated liquefaction.

BP has directed offtaker BP Gas Marketing Ltd. to dispatch an LNG carrier later this quarter for the first export. Revenue recognition for the project will begin once the first cargo is loaded.

The launch of the GTA project is expected to strengthen the economies of Senegal and Mauritania while contributing to global LNG supply at a time when Europe is securing energy for the upcoming winter.

Originally slated to start in 2023, the project faced delays in recent years. The first phase of GTA will produce approximately 2.3 million tons of LNG annually, leveraging significant offshore natural gas discoveries made in 2015.

With an expected lifespan of over 20 years, the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project will establish Senegal and Mauritania as a key LNG hub, positioning the region as a crucial player in the global energy market.
