Energy giant BP is leading a multi-well drilling campaign in Libya, marking the company’s return to operations in the country in 2024.
The initiative targets multiple oil and gas formations with the goal of bringing new wells online and supporting Libya’s national aim of increasing production to two million barrels per day.
In an interview with Energy Capital & Power at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2025, Ariel Flores, Senior Vice President of Subsurface at BP, shared that the company is leveraging existing seismic data and preparing for the upcoming licensing round set to launch in early 2025 to accelerate exploration efforts.
“We have a multi-well program underway, and with success, it should lead to even more wells. We are hopeful that the 3D seismic data we acquired, along with our latest technology, will improve imaging and help us position wells effectively, driving successful development in the future,” Flores explained.
In addition to the licensing round, BP is focusing on brownfield developments. Flores highlighted that “existing assets will form the foundation of our partnership, as we specialize in giant field redevelopments and brownfields.
We bring a strong skillset and proven track record in the greater MENA region, which we are eager to apply in Libya.”
Flores also emphasized the value of conferences like LEES 2025, noting that dialogue and networking provide opportunities for companies in Libya to build strong global partnerships. “By bringing our global partnerships to Libya, we are confident it will result in positive outcomes for the country.
These conferences foster commitment and momentum that will unlock new resources in the future,” he concluded.
