Botala Energy Ltd. (ASX:BTE) has partnered with AAAS Energy BV, a solar developer focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, to explore the potential for installing up to 250 MW of solar capacity at an energy hub currently under development in Botswana.
Located near the town of Palapye, the Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park, operated by Botala, is envisioned as the site for this ambitious solar project.
With plans to expand, the hub could eventually accommodate up to 500 MW of solar energy and 200 MW of gas-fired power generation.
The collaboration between Botala Energy and AAAS Energy will involve finalizing a bankable feasibility study (BFS) by the end of 2024.
This study will assess project costs, ownership structures, and funding mechanisms, paving the way for a final investment decision (FID).
A crucial aspect of the BFS will be to identify potential off-takers in the Southern African region and evaluate the feasibility of developing the project as a merchant power station.
Depending on the outcome, the partners may consider further solar capacity expansion under similar terms.
Botala Energy views the Leupane Energy Hub as a pivotal player in renewable and gas-fired power generation in the region.
As part of the agreement, AAAS Energy will acquire a 50% stake in the project for AUD 1 million (USD 650,000/EUR 609,000).
Having conducted grid connection studies and completed the public review phase of its environmental impact assessment (EIA), Botala Energy is progressing swiftly.
The comprehensive EIA covers various aspects, including a hybrid power station, a solar panel factory, LNG and/or CNG plants, offices, and mixed-use agriculture.
