Bié Province Expands Clean Energy With New Solar Park and Rural Electrification for 200,000 Residents
The province of Bié has strengthened its energy infrastructure with the inauguration of the Cuito Solar Photovoltaic Park, a project with 14.65 MWp of installed capacity that will supply clean power to more than 30,000 families.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Sunday, was attended by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, and the Provincial Governor of Bié, Celeste Elavoco David Adolfo.
Developed by Prodel, the Cuito Solar Photovoltaic Park spans 24.73 hectares and is equipped with 28,125 solar panels.
Construction began in January 2023 and created 170 direct jobs, with operations managed by Angolan teams.
The plant is expected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by around 30,240 tons and save 172,000 liters of fuel each year.
Beyond energy production, the project also delivered important social benefits, including a new four-room school with capacity for 50 students per classroom in the Kunje commune, Kassoma neighborhood.
A recycling and furniture manufacturing workshop was also established, training 50 young people and producing all the furniture for the new school.
During his visit to Bié, Minister João Baptista Borges also launched the province’s rural electrification project in the municipality of Andulo.
Scheduled for completion within 36 months, the initiative will provide electricity to more than 200,000 residents through over 45,000 household connections.
The project will include the construction of two stand-alone systems and three grid-connected systems, with a combined installed capacity of 39.15 MWp.
