AXIAN Energy has officially commenced construction of the NEA Kolda solar and battery storage facility, a major step toward advancing Senegal’s renewable energy ambitions.
Launched on May 22 in the southern region of Kolda, the hybrid power plant will generate 60 megawatts (MW) of solar energy and store 72 megawatt-hours (MWh), supplying clean electricity to over 25,000 households and reaching nearly 235,000 people.
The project reflects AXIAN’s commitment to an inclusive and impactful energy transition, aiming to deliver meaningful benefits at the local level.
Securing more than €105 million in funding, including €84 million in loans from financial institutions such as the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), FMO, and DEG, the NEA Kolda initiative stands as West Africa’s largest solar-plus-storage complex. It was first introduced by AXIAN in November 2024.
Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts were awarded in April 2025 to Voltalia and Entech Smart Energies.
The project supports Senegal’s national energy strategy, which targets full electrification—up from the current access rate of 84%—through expanded deployment of renewable energy solutions.
