Angola remains the largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa for the third consecutive month

Oil production in Angola in July surpassed Nigeria for the third consecutive month, with the country producing 1.180 million barrels a day, against 1.084 in the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the monthly report of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Angola has been increasing production slightly since the beginning of the year, rising from 1.123 million barrels a day in the last quarter of 2021 to 1.161 million in the first quarter of this year and 1.173 in the second quarter of 2022.

In comparison, according to data submitted to OPEC by countries, Nigeria produced 1.260 in the last three months of 2021, improving slightly to 1.299 in the first three months of the year, but falling to 1.133 in the second quarter of the year.

In May and June of this year, Angola produced 1.162 million and 1.175 million barrels per day, which compares with 1.024 million and 1.158 million barrels produced by Nigeria.

Nigeria, the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa and the most populous country, had the second biggest decline recorded among OPEC members in July, although Angola also reduced its production, according to secondary sources that are also available in the OPEC report.

Secondary sources presented in OPEC’s August report show Angola producing 1.164 million barrels a day in May, 1.184 million in June and 1.165 in July, while Nigeria produced 1.153 in May, 1.176 in June and 1.183 in July.

OPEC is an organization that represents the interests of 13 oil exporting countries: Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
