Angola Holds Major Potential for Solar and Hydropower Generation, Highlights German-Angolan Hydrogen Partnership
Angola has one of the greatest potentials in Southern Africa for generating renewable energy from solar and hydropower sources, according to Vandre Spellmeier from the German-Angolan Hydrogen Office (H2-diplo).
Spellmeier made the remarks on Wednesday in Luanda during the Conference on the Angola-Germany Energy Partnership.
In a statement, Spellmeier emphasized Angola’s strategic importance in driving sustainable industrialization and strengthening the energy sector’s engagement with international markets, including buyers and investors.
He noted that in recent years, cooperation between Angola and Germany has reached a new level with the launch of the H2-diplo program, an initiative of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office.
The program aims to promote international dialogue, provide technical training in hydrogen technologies, and support sustainable project development that not only meets external energy demands but also contributes to local industrialization through the creation of new value chains.
According to Spellmeier, the partnership is now entering a new phase with the Baseline Study, which will serve as the foundation for the National Hydrogen Strategy of Angola.
During the same event, Orlando da Mata from Sonangol highlighted that the ongoing global energy transition is “inevitable,” adding that Angola possesses enormous natural energy potential and an opportunity to form a strong partnership that combines technological development with renewable energy leadership.
The conference was attended by Arlindo Carlos, Angola’s Secretary of State for Energy, and Thomas Steffen, Secretary of State at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, as well as representatives from both countries’ ministries and energy companies, according to the statement.
