Angola Increases Diesel Price as Part of Fuel Subsidy Reform

The Angolan government has raised the price of diesel from 200 to 300 kwanzas per liter, effective from 1:00 AM on March 24, 2025.

The Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute (IRDP) announced the measure, stating that it is part of the ongoing “gradual adjustment of retail fuel prices to market levels.”

In a statement released on Sunday, the IRDP clarified that, as the regulatory authority, it is responsible for setting and announcing fuel prices.

While diesel prices have increased, the retail prices of other regulated fuels—including gasoline, illuminating oil, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)—remain unchanged.

This is not the first fuel price adjustment in recent years. In April 2024, the government raised diesel prices to 200 kwanzas per liter. Similarly, in June 2023, gasoline prices were increased from 160 to 300 kwanzas per liter.

Angola’s fuel prices are heavily subsidized by the state. However, the government has been gradually reducing these subsidies since 2023, in line with recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has long advocated for fuel subsidy reforms.
