Angola Contributes 9% to Global Kimberley Process Diamond Trade in 2024

Angola accounted for 9% of the diamonds traded globally by countries participating in the Kimberley Process during the 2024 fiscal year, according to the National Commission’s (CNPK) Balance of Actions and Perspectives Report for the 2023/2024 Sector Development Plan.

The report indicates that Angola sold 9,754,309.81 carats during the period, valued at $1.5 billion, with an average price of $157.06 per carat.

The CNPK’s data shows that total global production for the same period reached 111,522,755.27 carats, equivalent to $12.7 billion, averaging $114.10 per carat.

The statistics highlight the Russian Federation as the largest producer, contributing 37,316,754.45 carats (33% of global output) and generating revenues of $3.6 billion (28%), with an average price of $96.64 per carat.

Botswana followed, selling 25,094,818.00 carats (23%), valued at $3.28 billion (26%), at an average of $130.83 per carat.

Canada ranked third, trading 15,980,776.43 carats (14%) and earning approximately $1.55 billion (12%), with an average price of $96.96 per carat.

Namibia placed fifth, selling 2,385,157.38 carats (2%) and generating $1.23 billion (10%), with an impressive average price of $517.35 per carat.

South Africa also stood out, selling 5,891,885.00 carats (5%) and earning $793.95 million (6%) at an average price of $134.75 per carat.

Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo were also among the notable producers.

As part of its strategic goals, Angola aims to assume the rotating presidency of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).

This involves revising key legal frameworks, including Presidential Decree No. 56/03 on the implementation of the KPCS, Resolution No. 3/03 on the Kimberley Process, and Executive Decree No. 462/15 on CNPK’s Internal Regulations.

Although Angola initially intended to present its candidacy by 2026, challenges arose due to Belarus’s advanced candidacy since 2022, which was accepted during the last plenary session. As a result, Thailand will serve as vice-president in 2025 and assume the presidency in 2026.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is an international mechanism established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56 in 2000.

It aims to ensure that rough diamonds traded on the global market originate from conflict-free zones, thereby fostering sustainable and ethical practices in the diamond industry.
