Caculo Cabaça Hydropower Project Reaches 40% Completion; First Turbine to Begin Operation in 2027
The Ministry of Energy and Water has announced that the first of the four turbines of the Caculo Cabaça Hydroelectric Project is expected to begin operating in 2027.
The project, located in Cuanza Norte province, has reached approximately 40 percent completion and continues to progress at a steady pace.
In a statement accessed by VerAngola, the ministry highlighted that on Tuesday two addenda related to the project’s construction were formally signed. The signing ceremony was presided over by the Secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos.
The first addendum concerns the contract for the supply, installation, and commissioning of electromechanical equipment and addresses the financial rebalance of the agreement between the Ministry of Energy and Water and CGGC.
The second addendum was signed between CGGC and VOITH, covering the subcontract for the same scope of equipment and technical services.
Once completed, the Caculo Cabaça project will add 2,172 megawatts of generation capacity to the national grid. Its reservoir will hold 463 cubic hectometers of water, and the dam will feature four main generating units of 530 MW each, along with an additional 52 MW ecological power station.
According to the ministry, the new hydroelectric facility will significantly enhance the reliability of Angola’s interconnected electricity system.
Due to its large capacity, it is also expected to create opportunities for exporting surplus energy to neighboring countries, boosting state revenues.
The statement further notes that the project will help accelerate national industrialization through the supply of clean and environmentally friendly energy.
Improved electricity access is expected to create favorable conditions for new businesses, increased investment, job creation, and overall economic dynamism, thereby contributing to better living standards for Angolans.
