Angola, Japan Partner to Expand Electricity Infrastructure in Namibe, Huila, Cuando Cubango, and Cunene
Angola and Japan have signed a cooperation agreement to expand electricity infrastructure in the southern provinces of Namibe, Huila, Cuando Cubango, and Cunene.
The signing ceremony, held Tuesday in Luanda, formalized the Project to Strengthen Transmission Systems in the Southern Region of Angola.
The agreement was signed by Angola’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, and Japan’s Ambassador to Angola, Sano Hiroaki. According to the government, the initiative aims to increase the capacity and resilience of the electricity transmission network in the targeted provinces, ensuring more reliable power access.
“This project will promote dependable electricity supply, directly contributing to the economic and social development of these regions, while advancing the country’s energy sustainability,” the government statement said.
Minister Téte António described the accord as a “fundamental step” that precedes the signing of further agreements under the Angola–Japan bilateral cooperation framework.
The agreement comes ahead of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), scheduled for August 20–22 in Yokohama, Japan.
The statement noted that, during the conference, Angola and Japan may establish additional commitments across multiple sectors to further strengthen bilateral ties.
The signing ceremony was also attended by Domingos Custódio Vieira Lopes, Angola’s Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Angolan Communities, along with other senior officials.
