Renewable energy firm AMEA Power, headquartered in the UAE, has announced the signing of a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Eskom, a major South African utility company, for the 120-megawatt Doornhoek Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project.
The project, awarded under Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), was developed by a consortium led by AMEA Power in partnership with local entities.
AMEA Power holds the majority share in the $120 million solar PV initiative, collaborating with Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Consulting, both African women-owned enterprises.
Funding for the project includes debt financing from Standard Bank South Africa and equity financing from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) for local partners.
Situated near Klerksdorp in the North West province, the project is poised to generate over 325 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy annually, powering approximately 97,000 households and offsetting 330,000 metric tons of carbon emissions upon completion.
This initiative aligns with South Africa’s target of achieving a 22% renewable energy share in its energy mix by 2030.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, expressed pride in the consortium’s achievement, emphasizing its commitment to driving environmental sustainability and fostering socio-economic progress through renewable energy initiatives.
