Alrosa Unearths 468-Carat Diamond, the Largest Gem-Quality Rough in Russian History

Alrosa has discovered a 468.30-carat fancy amber-colored diamond, the largest gem-quality rough stone ever found in Russia, surpassing the miner’s previous record of 401 carats set in 2013.

The historic stone was recovered from one of Alrosa’s mines in the Yakutia region, the company announced last week.

CEO Pavel Marinychev highlighted the timing of the discovery, which follows the unveiling of the “New Sun,” a fancy vivid yellow diamond over 100 carats—the largest ever manufactured in Russia.

“The year 2025 will undoubtedly hold a special place in the history of the Russian diamond industry,” Marinychev said.

“In April, we presented the largest diamond ever cut in our country, and now nature has gifted us this incredible rough stone.

It is symbolic that this discovery coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. We have decided to name the diamond in honor of this significant national milestone.”

The announcement comes despite a challenging start to the year for Alrosa. In the first quarter ending March 31, the company reported a 42% drop in revenue year-on-year to RUB 58.13 billion ($709.4 million), with net profit falling 29% to RUB 14.48 billion ($176.7 million).

The decline was attributed to an oversupply in the midstream, weak global demand, continued geopolitical tensions, and international sanctions.
