Alrosa Launches AI Technology to Accelerate Diamond Discovery

Alrosa Introduces AI System to Revolutionize Diamond Exploration in Challenging Terrains

Alrosa has introduced a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) system aimed at accelerating the discovery of diamond deposits in complex geological environments.

The new technology is designed to enhance the accuracy of identifying promising exploration sites while significantly reducing search time and costs.

The company estimates that the system could save hundreds of millions of rubles per project.

Diamond exploration has slowed in recent decades, as most of the large and accessible kimberlite pipes were discovered during the 20th century.

Future deposits are expected to be deeper underground and located in geologically challenging areas, making advanced technologies essential, Alrosa noted.

The AI system leverages neural networks trained on over 50 years of Alrosa’s proprietary geological data.

The company has digitized its archives and continuously updates the model with new information from ongoing exploration efforts.

“The geological corps has always driven the adoption of the latest technologies,” said Alrosa CEO Pavel Marinychev. “This new system is a Russian innovation, and we are currently testing its capabilities.”

Global diamond reserves are estimated at 1.7 to 1.9 billion carats, sufficient to support production for decades.

Russia holds more than half of these reserves, making the adoption of advanced exploration technologies critical for ensuring long-term market stability.
