Africa’s Largest Solar Rooftop Installation Launched in Ghana

Africa’s largest solar rooftop installation was recently launched in Ghana, announced by Herbert Krapah, the country’s Minister of State for Energy, on Thursday.

According to the Russian newspaper Sputnik, the solar installation spans 95,745 square meters—equivalent to 20 football fields—and was inaugurated in the city of Tema, Ghana.

Funded by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC), this solar project aims to generate 24.7 GWh of clean energy annually.

The project, costing $17 million, is owned by the local LMI Holding Company Limited. The solar electricity generated will be supplied to customers in the Tema Free Zone Enclave industrial area.

“With a capacity of 16.82 MW, this project contributes to our vision of building a greener, more sustainable future for our people,” Krapah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Energy Minister expressed gratitude to the IFC for funding the project and other LMI initiatives, urging the institution to extend similar support to other private solar energy enterprises.

Krapah also highlighted that the project will empower youth by providing skill training and generating jobs.

Reports indicate that Ghanaian engineers and personnel were responsible for the entire project’s construction, connection, and installation.

In June, Ghana launched West Africa’s largest floating solar PV system. This innovative project, combining solar and hydro resources, aims to supply at least 10% of the country’s power once fully operational.
