Africa to Launch 41 Green Hydrogen Projects by 2030 Amid Challenges

Africa is set to begin constructing 41 green hydrogen projects by 2030, according to the Energy Industries Council (EIC), a global energy trade body.

Despite the sector’s potential, it faces significant challenges, including securing buyers, developing regulatory frameworks, and building essential infrastructure.

North African nations like Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco, with year-round sunshine, are well-positioned for investments in green hydrogen production and export facilities, as highlighted in the Africa OPEX report 2025. However, the report did not provide details on specific project costs or total sector investments.

Proximity to Europe is driving collaboration between North African countries and European nations like Germany, Austria, and Italy, with plans to convert 3,300 km of existing gas pipelines to transport 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

No commercial-scale hydrogen projects in Africa have yet reached a final investment decision, according to Neil Golding, EIC’s Director of Market Intelligence.

However, optimism is growing as Namibia and South Africa leverage European Union grants to advance hydrogen projects across the supply chain.

High initial costs for green hydrogen development highlight the importance of international partnerships and funding.

Europe’s REPowerEU Plan, aimed at reducing reliance on Russian gas, seeks to import 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually from Africa, further supporting the sector’s growth.

The EIC emphasized that expanding hydrogen production in Africa will require sustained funding and collaborative efforts to overcome these barriers and unlock its full potential.
