The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Energy plans to integrate 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind power into the national grid by the summer of 2025, as reported by a government official to Asharq Business. All projects will be executed by private sector companies under a build, own, operate (B.O.O.) model.
This model allows investors to finance, construct, operate, and own the renewable energy projects, while the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) will commit to purchasing all electricity generated from these plants throughout their operational lifespan.
Solar power plants are expected to have a lifespan of approximately 20 years, while wind power facilities will last about 25 years.
Key projects include a 500-megawatt (MW) solar power plant developed by Norway’s Scatec and a 1,000-MW solar project by UAE-based AMEA Power, which will be constructed in two phases of 500 MW each.
Additionally, a 650-MW wind farm will be developed by a consortium comprising Orascom Construction, Japan’s Toyota Tsusho, and France’s Engie, alongside a 200-MW wind farm by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power.
Furthermore, companies will implement 600 MW of additional solar projects, with specific companies yet to be announced.
The total investment for these projects is projected to exceed $2.5 billion, with many located in Ras Ghareb, near Hurghada, and in Aswan.
