The onshore Buzi block in Sofala province, Mozambique, is projected to start natural gas production by 2026, with plans to power a thermoelectric plant in the region.
Rudêncio Morais, research and production administrator at the National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH), revealed that assessment activities are underway to finalize the development plan, expected to be submitted to the government by the end of 2024.
Morais shared this information during the II Indonesia-Africa Forum in Bali, highlighting the ongoing 2D seismic data acquisition by the Indonesian company Buzi Hydrocarbons Pte. Ltd. (BHPL), which holds a 75% stake in the project.
The Mozambican state, represented by ENH, holds the remaining 25%. The seismic work, which involves ENH technicians, is expected to be completed in northern Buzi by November 2024, with southern operations commencing in December.
Morais emphasized that the seismic acquisition is a key step in understanding the geological potential of Buzi and Divinhe, improving the accuracy of subsurface data last collected in 2012/2013.
The development plan submission is expected in late 2024, with gas production slated for late 2026.
During the forum, the Indonesian private sector expressed interest in collaborating with Mozambique on a safe energy transition and adding value to local mineral resources.
