Angola and De Beers Discuss Progress on Diamond Partnership

On Monday, in Luanda, a meeting was held between Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, and De Beers Group’s Operations Director, Moses Madondo, to discuss the implementation of the Strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the diamond sector.

According to Jornal de Angola, citing the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, the meeting focused on assessing the progress of the MoU, which was signed in Cape Town, South Africa, in February during the Mining Investment Forum. The agreement aims to strengthen the partnership between De Beers Group and Angola.

This meeting follows the signing of two mineral investment contracts in 2022 for licensed areas in northeastern Angola, where exploration activities are currently underway.

The MoU outlines key areas for collaboration between the parties, including the review of several kimberlite deposits to reassess their economic potential using new De Beers technologies.

Additionally, it emphasizes promoting transparency and traceability in diamond production and identifying opportunities for developing local community capacities.

Representing De Beers at the meeting were Julie Kong, President of Exploration, and Mike Roberts, General Director for Angola.

The Angolan delegation included Jânio Víctor, Secretary of State for Mineral Resources, and consultants Mankenda Ambroise and José Galiano.

De Beers Group, a South African company, has extensive experience in diamond exploration, mining, marketing, and retail.
