An initiative for a green hydrogen exploration project in Barra do Dande, Bengo province, is set to commence in 2024, announced President João Lourenço during a panel discussion at the 3rd Luanda Biennale.
The endeavor, to be developed in collaboration with Sonangol, the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, and a German company, aims to cater to the domestic market while exporting green energy to Europe and other global consumers.
President Lourenço emphasized the country’s commitment to reducing polluting gases and revealed plans to sign an initiative for decarbonizing oil and gas at COP-28.
Highlighting Angola’s efforts to combat climate change, Lourenço underscored measures undertaken, such as decreasing fossil fuel combustion in thermal power plants and focusing on hydroelectricity.
He cited the construction of dams in the Baixo Cuanza Basin, contributing to a significant portion of Angola’s clean energy supply, reaching around 65-67%.
Angola aims to share surplus energy with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), already operational and serving as a key step in the country’s energy strategy.
