The the National Oil, Gas, and Biofuels Agency (ANPG Adopts) Satellite Radar to Detect Oil Spills
Angola’s national concessionaire, the National Oil, Gas, and Biofuels Agency (ANPG), has signed an agreement with the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN) to utilize the organization’s TECH-ECOLOGIA – a national technological solution that employs satellite radar imagery for monitoring oil spills.
The satellite radar imagery enables the ANPG to promptly detect and monitor any occurrences of oil spills in Angola’s offshore basins, empowering the regulatory body to respond rapidly to environmental incidents.
TECH-ECOLOGIA was developed by GGPEN in collaboration with Angola’s Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies, and Social Communication. It gathers images through optical sensors, spanning various electromagnetic spectrum ranges, including visible, near-infrared, shortwave infrared, and thermal infrared regions.
By utilizing this satellite imagery, the ANPG can detect oil spills and also gather data on the frequency and volume of oil spilled in and around Angola’s offshore rigs. This state-of-the-art solution, created by Angolans, allows for cost-effective monitoring of large oceanic areas. The agreement’s signing came after a series of tests conducted by the ANPG’s Environmental Safety Office in conjunction with GGPEN during 2022.
