Angola begins production of critical minerals for the energy transition

The government will initiate the production of neodymium and praseodymium, minerals used in the manufacturing of batteries for electric cars, over the next five years, according to a statement by the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum, and Gas (Mirempet) and AME Trade.

They announced the 2nd Angolan Mining Conference & Exhibition (AMC) 2023, which will take place in November.

Country is positioned to benefit from critical minerals, Archive Copper and niobium are joining the list of minerals in which the authorities are focusing on producing in the next half-decade, as indicated in the document.

It highlights that Angola possesses 36 out of the world’s 51 most critical minerals, including cobalt, graphite, lead, lithium, and nickel.

“The country has a diverse portfolio of mineral resources and is ideally positioned to benefit from the production of critical minerals,” wrote the organizers of AMC 2023.

The organization presents the event as a conference dedicated to Angola’s mining industry and attracting partners for the mineral supply chain, held under the theme “Developing Angola’s mineral resource potential to supply critical minerals for a global clean energy transition.”

Discussions are expected on topics such as “The New Era in Angola’s mining sector: regulatory framework, vision, and plans,” “Opportunities for energy transition minerals in Angola,” “Statistics and updates from key mining companies in Angola,” and “Women in mining, promoting inclusion and diversity.”

AMC 2023 is an international event consisting of conferences, seminars, a social program, and a trade show, established to attract foreign investment and promote the vision of the Angolan government in the mining sector and the economy in general.

Among the companies participating in the event are Standard Bank, Bauer Angola, Aggreko, Movicortes Angola, Lucapa, Minbos Resources, Pensava Metals, Sodiam, Fátima Freitas & Associados, Ernst and Young, Catoca Lda, Endiama, Ute Igme, Lneg, Maxam, and Vieira de Almeida.
