The Portuguese government has decided to maintain the unchanged discount on the tax on petroleum products (ISP) this month.
The Ministry of Finance announced yesterday June 6th that the discount remains at 13.1 cents per liter for diesel and 15.3 cents per liter for gasoline.
The Ministry of Finance will also continue updating the additional charge on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, known as the carbon tax, which began in May. It is now being updated by approximately two cents for gasoline and diesel.
The Ministry of Finance states that in June, the total reduction in the tax burden will be 28 cents per liter of diesel and 30 cents per liter of gasoline. For the agricultural sector, there will be a decrease of six cents per liter of diesel.
“The reference price for diesel and gasoline is currently below the price observed in October 2021, which justified the initial measures to mitigate the impact of ISP. Additionally, fuel consumption in the first four months of 2023 reached a record high of the last decade,” says the Ministry of Finance.
Lusa reports that road fuel consumption in April, the last month with published data, recorded a growth of 19 percent compared to the same period last year.
Furthermore, fuel taxation in Portugal is significantly below the weighted average of the eurozone: 16 percent for diesel and 11 percent for gasoline.
