Angola’s mining industry has only 1,000 women out of 11,000 workers

Endiama’s Executive Director, Ana Maria Feijó, stressed that the institution still has a lot to do so that women are better represented, at a time when they make up only 10 percent of the workforce, that is, in a universe of 11 thousand workers , a thousand are women.

“Faced with reality, there has been a certain impediment due to the fact of having many tasks, such as being a mother and a wife, because many of these aspects prevent, in a way, the ladies from having a position within the structure of Minas Gerais”.

The director of the office of the chairman of the Board of Management of Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, Engrácia João, who spoke on the panel via the Zoom platform, said that CATOCA does not have a policy aimed at “gender” when hiring employees and that there is no preference for gender, “there is no impediment to receiving women”.

The representative of the fourth largest mine in the world and number one in diamond exploration guaranteed that CATOCA is one of the few companies and perhaps the only one where a woman from Minas Gerais can work with children up to 4 years old.

“In 2005 women could not receive their children in the mines, after a while, mothers could already receive their children staying up to 4 years old and today because of Covid-19 the authorization is suspended”, he stressed.

Engracia Soito also made it known that the stability of women in the mine, passes through the safe haven that is the family, referring that often the woman does not have the emotional stability to stay in the mine because she feels pressured by family members.

Director Ndjamila Africano said that Geoangol currently has 135 workers, of which 17 percent are women and 83 percent are men, of these 17 percent, only three women are in intermediate leadership positions and one at of the lowest leadership.

Ndjamila Africano stressed that the company still does not have a defined intentional policy for the recruitment of women in the sector, but, given the agenda taken over the last 4 years to position and give the opportunity to stand out in this sector, he said, it is an issue that is in development phase.

What the institution has noticed, according to the director, in terms of recruitment is that of the different positions available, women have represented the largest number of participants and most of them are the ones who are best prepared in these recruitment and selection processes. He has shown responsibility, preparation and firmness in the way he expresses his willingness to want to work, he guaranteed.
