African oil producers meet in Luanda

Luanda hosts, next Monday, the third meeting of Executives of National Oil Companies (NOC) from member countries of the Organization of African Oil Producers (APPO). The meeting, which is organized by the national oil company Sonangol, with the support of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (Mirempet), will discuss and exchange experiences on implementation, policies and production of local content in the oil sector. The National Oil Companies of APPO member countries will also analyze the organization’s long-term strategy and discuss the creation of a fund to leverage the African oil industry. According to a Minrempet press release to which JA had access, delegations from several member countries began arriving in Luanda yesterday, with visits to various Sonangol facilities and the MIREMPET building scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday.

This year Angola presides over the APPO Council of Ministers, having organized, last May, the eighth Oil Conference and Exhibition, commonly known as Cape VIII. APPO, formerly known as the African Petroleum Producers Association, (APPA), was created on January 27, 1987 in Lagos, Nigeria, to serve as a platform for cooperation and coordination of efforts, collaboration, sharing of knowledge and competences between countries. African Oil Producers. The first meeting of this group, including the four countries, was held in Libreville, Gabon, in October 1984. Currently, APPO members have increased from eight (8) in 1987 to fifteen (15) (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, Niger, Nigeria and South Africa). In 2016, Angola hosted the first conference and exhibition on local content in the oil and gas industry in Africa and the second in November 2018.
