A $7.9 billion green hydrogen project has been launched in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, with backing from China.
The ambitious initiative will take place within the Liberty Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) at Atabrikang, in the Ibeno Local Government Area.
The agreement was formalized in Uyo, Nigeria, with representatives from the Nigerian Federal Government, APPL Hydrogen Limited (AHL), and China’s LONGi Green Energy Technology signing the deal.
Idara Ekpo, Chief Visionary Officer of AHL, revealed that the project aims to produce 1.2 million metric tons of green hydrogen-based methanol annually for export. In addition, the project will produce medical oxygen and food-grade CO₂.
Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, highlighted the project’s alignment with the country’s decarbonization goals.
Alhaji Bamange Usman Jada, Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority, emphasized the economic benefits, noting that the project would boost exports, create jobs, and help address foreign exchange challenges.
He also emphasized its potential for technology transfer and its support for environmental sustainability.
According to the Energy Industries Council (EIC), Africa is set to see 41 hydrogen projects developed over the next five years.
However, none of these projects have yet reached a final investment decision (FID). EIC’s Africa OPEX Report pointed out major challenges, including securing reliable offtake agreements, establishing a solid regulatory framework, and building resilient infrastructure.
